The poet Paul Celan wrote: "What times are these when even to speak is a crime for containing so much being spoken."
This quote inspired the title for the Philadelphia Museum of Art exhibit, What Times Are These? and was the starting point for an evening of readings and reflection around language, politics, and the theme of grace.
Held in conjunction with the museum, this At What Cost event responded to the exhibit’s initiating question: “How might an artist puncture a culture of silence?” We answered with: “grace.” With this as our entrance, the evening’s artists offered work that embodied and illuminated this theme and its attendant questions: is grace the way in? The ground beneath us? A seat at the table? Whose table? And what are the words that will bring us back to one another?
